This post is written in partnership with Dolce Hotels and Resorts. I was an invited guest of The H Hotel. All opinions are my own.
During the last weekend in April my husband and I were invited to stay at The H Hotel in downtown Midland, Michigan. The H Hotel is part of Dolce Hotels and Resorts, which is a part of the Wyndham Hotel Group. As a travel blogger, I love to explore new places and check out different hotels, so I knew this was an opportunity that I couldn’t pass up.
Prior to visiting The H Hotel for our overnight stay, I had been to Midland a few times, but I had never visited the downtown area, so I was excited to spend a little bit of time in this quaint town and see everything it had to offer. Midland is part of the Great Lakes Bay Region – a region in Michigan that also includes Saginaw, Bay City, Flint, Birch Run, Chesaning and Frankenmuth. The area offers plenty of things to do such as outdoor activities, shopping and farmer’s markets.
On the day of our hotel stay, we packed up the car and drove north toward Midland. It took us a little over an hour and a half to get there from our home in the Metro Detroit area. When we arrived at The H, we pulled into the parking garage (parking is complimentary for hotel guests), grabbed our luggage and walked to the lobby. We were greeted as soon as we entered the hotel and the staff at the front desk got us checked in quickly. They were so friendly and helpful and they answered all of our questions about the property and told us where everything was located. They also let us know that if there was anything we needed during our stay, we could contact them and they’d be happy to help.
While we were checking in, we had the front desk associate give us a quick overview of the hotel. She told us that The H has three restaurants – Table Restaurant, Café Zinc and Bar Oxygen and plenty of amenities including a pool and fitness center. From there, she handed us our room keys and directed us toward the elevators.
Our room was located on the third floor all the way at the end of the hallway. It was so nice to be away from the elevators and in a quiet corner of the hotel. When we walked into our room we were so impressed with everything – the crisp, white linens, the modern décor and the overall spaciousness. It felt like we were the first couple to ever stay the night in this room. As we set down our luggage, we instantly noticed a delicious spread of wild mushroom ragout, boursin cheese and smoked whitefish pate. We both thought this was a great way to be welcomed to the hotel – it was definitely a nice touch.
One of the coolest things about our room was that the window shades were automatic. All you had to do to raise or lower the shades was press a button on the wall next to the lamp/nightstand. This was an awesome feature. The shades in hotel rooms can be finicky sometimes (either the shades don't stick together so sunlight beams through your window bright and early in the morning or the shades don't close all the way), so the fact that the shades at The H were automatic was a big bonus for us.
Aside from the bed and desk area, our hotel room had a small lounge spot near the window. This was a great place to sit and relax. We found ourselves sitting here while reading, scrolling through our phones and while enjoying the view when we looked out the window.
Our room's bathroom was breathtaking. Everything from the floor to the tile in the shower was stunning. All of the bathroom amenities you could ever need were right on the bathroom counter or tucked away in the storage spaces in the vanity. As someone who wears makeup, I loved seeing the makeup remover wash cloth. I've never seen something like this in a hotel before.
As we continued to get acclimated to our room, we also noticed that The H Hotel was super savvy when planning the layout of their rooms. The closets were tucked away and built into the wall, the nightstands had outlet plugs integrated right into them so you could plug in your phone and have it within an arm’s reach while laying in bed, and the desk/TV area had several ports for different connectivity inputs.
Since we had some time to kill before dinner, my husband and I decided to go for a walk and explore the property as well as the downtown Midland area. We rode down in the elevators and made our way to the front of the hotel. We had noticed a bridge and a river from our bedroom window and wanted to check it out. We happened to visit The H the same weekend that the hotel was hosting prom for a local Midland high school. It was so fun to see all the students dressed to the nines. Everyone we passed looked so excited and ready for the night to begin! Seeing everyone get their photos taken outside of the hotel made me reflect for a moment on my own prom and how I wished that it was held at a gorgeous venue like The H.
While we were out and about, we strolled through downtown Midland and popped into a few shops. We browsed around and looked at everything from kitchen items to Michigan-made art and décor. All of the walking we did made us work up an appetite, so we were looking forward to our 6 o’clock dinner reservation at Table.
Dinner at Table Restaurant
Since Table is fine dining restaurant, we got dressed up for our dinner date. I wore a dress with nude colored heels while Kyle wore a nice button up shirt, dress pants and brown shoes. The only time we ever get dressed up is if we're going to a wedding or a special occasion, so it was nice to wear something that we normally don't wear when going out to dinner.
As soon as we entered Table, we were greeted by the hostess and she took us to be seated right away. We sat down and began to look at the menu to pick out what we wanted to order. As we skimmed the menu, our waitress placed a basket of bread on the table and took our drink order. We decided to split a bottle of wine – we selected a red blend and it was the perfect thing to toast with as we settled in for a delicious dinner.
To start, I ordered French Onion soup and my husband ordered a Caesar Salad. The soup was so flavorful, and I loved all of the melted cheese on top. I was able to sneak in a few bites of my husband’s salad and that was good, too. After finishing up with our appetizers, it was time for our main course. Both my husband and I decided to order the Filet Mignon. I ordered mine with a side of Macaroni Rigate and Cheese while Kyle decided to go with Truffle and Parmesan Thick Cut Chips.
Kyle and I had Filet served at our wedding, so whenever we have the chance to eat it during a dinner date, it’s very special. It definitely reminds us of the day we got married. The Filet Mignon at The H was superb - tender, juicy and all around mouthwatering.
Once our dinner wrapped up, we were so full of delicious food that we went back to our room for a little bit to relax. When we walked in we noticed a plate with various desserts on it. We were completely surprised by this and couldn't believe how generous The H Hotel was. They treated us like royalty during our stay and we soaked it up as much as we could during our short visit.
After snacking on a few macaroons, we just lounged around in our hotel room. It was so nice to kick back, relax and watch some TV together after dinner.
Dessert at Bar Oxygen
As soon as we started to crave dessert, we headed to Oxygen for a night cap and a sweet treat before bed. We absolutely loved the atmosphere of this bar. It had a very cool vibe to it, especially at night. When we walked in there were a few people sitting at the bar, but otherwise we had the whole place to ourselves. Our waiter promptly brought us drink menus and we tried to make our minds up on what to get for dessert. To drink, Kyle got a rosemary gin and tonic and I decided to go with a black cherry mojito. Once we were ready for dessert, we decided to order the chocolate hazelnut mousse cake and the key lime tarte. Both practically made our mouths water when they were brought to our table. The key lime tarte was so light and refreshing – it was the perfect thing to order after having Filet Mignon for dinner. Kyle enjoyed the chocolate hazelnut mousse cake and said that it was the best dessert that he’s had in a while.
Once we got back to our room and changed into our PJs, we peeled back the covers and crawled into bed. It was so nice to just doze off and to sleep in such a relaxing environment. The hotel was so quiet, and our room was dark as could be. I actually woke up one time in the middle of the night and as I laid there, I couldn’t help but notice how quiet it was. I’ve stayed in a lot of hotels and complete silence at night time can definitely be a rarity.
Breakfast at Café Zinc
The next morning, we woke up and felt completely refreshed and reenergized. We both slept so well and had to practically pull ourselves out of bed to make it to our 9 o’clock breakfast reservation at Café Zinc (okay, maybe I’m exaggerating a little, but we really were so comfortable in our room). Once we entered Café Zinc, I instantly felt like I was in a different place. The restaurant feels like an upscale NYC hotspot, yet it’s in downtown Midland, Michigan. All of the fixtures and furnishings were beautiful. Café Zinc is designed and themed to represent a French bistro setting and the restaurant has a French pastry Chef that prepares house made pastries and breads on a daily basis.
We were taken to our table and handed our breakfast menus. Everything sounded delicious, but we were able to make up our minds pretty quickly. I ordered pancakes and bacon while my husband ordered the breakfast special: Steak Eggs Benedict (with sous-vide steak). While we were waiting for our breakfast to arrive, we enjoyed sipping on coffee and juice and just talking about the hotel and what a lovely stay we had. Both Kyle and I couldn’t get over how classy and elegant the property was and Kyle even mentioned that he’d love to visit again sometime. I told him that I was on the same page and that I could definitely see us coming back to The H for a date night or long weekend.
When our food was brought to our table, we couldn’t wait to dig in! My pancakes were golden brown and the bacon was cooked to perfection. It was hot, crispy and had great flavor. Kyle’s Steak Eggs Benedict looked amazing! It came with hash browns on the side and some fruit. As soon as he put the first bite in his mouth, I could see his eyes light up.
We loved being able to take it slow in the morning and go at our own pace as we ate our breakfast. We struck up a conversation with an older couple that was sitting at the table next to ours and they explained that they were originally from Midland and they were in town visiting with family. They said that they loved staying at The H because of all the amenities and the impeccable service. After staying overnight and experiencing the hotel for ourselves, we could definitely see why they choose The H over any other hotels in the area whenever they come to Midland.
After breakfast it was time for us to pack up our things and head back home. We had an absolutely amazing say at The H and we can't wait to visit again. It was the perfect spot for a weekend getaway. Everything from the food to the service was outstanding and everyone we encountered was so welcoming and friendly.
